Young Thug, the Atlanta phenomenon just released his long-awaited debut album. While most fans expected a lot from this project, I wanted to see if Young Thug’s musical evolution was positive.
For those who don’t know, Thugger was the biggest rapper of 2014 thanks to multiple singles « About the Money », « The Blanguage », « Lifestyle » and his collaborative mixtape Rich Gang with Rich Homie Quan and Birdman. He had many label issues in the last year but his situation seems stable now.
Young Thug is always showing Lil Wayne his respect and influence on him but the last episode was epic. Thug first called his album Carter 6 as a reference to Weezy’s albums but Wayne tried to sue him so he had to change the title to Barter 6.
Anyway, let’s talk about music !
« baby you know I might be the realest nigga you ever gonna see »
This album is giving us a best of YT unique skills and tricks. It’s an invitation to enter his world and get lost in it. He got excellent beats on here, with strong LondonOnDaTrack vibes. Actually, the ATL Producer was at the origin of YT biggest songs from last year so it’s obvious they worked together for his album. The production level is higher than before, matching the perfection of « About the Money » for example.
The whole project sounds nice and clean, instrumentals are minimalist but you can clearly hear trap elements. The surprise is that neither Travis Scott nor Rich Homie Quan are featured. Two artists with whom thug collaborated and toured recently.
List of featurings : Birdman, TI, Boozie Badass, Young Dolph, Yak Gotti, Duke, Jacquees.
Many new artists and not so many superstars, YT chosed to work with friends rather than the obvious famous industry names. Some people might be disapointed that he didn’t put songs with Lil Wayne, Drake… but you know he doesn’t give a fuck about anything… Rumors says that he’s already preparing to drop another album this summer.
Overall this album is great for Young Thug fans, let’s hope it attracts new listeners too. I highly recommend you give this album a listen, just to hear a glimpse of rap futuristic evolution.
